Favorite Fruit: Chicozapote

My favorite of the Mexican fruits I’ve tried is chicozapote. It looks from the outside a lot like mamey. However, it is a much sweeter and softer fruit. A British friend pegged it when he said it was like a candied apple. It has a burnt sugar taste, almost spiced. The great Mexico City Ice Cream shop, Roxy, carries chicozapote flavor. Don’t confuse the fruit with Zapote Negro, another popular flavor of popsicles, ices, and ice creams — stronger, dark brown to black, and prepared with orange, brandy or citrus.

Must be — pictures of the sapodilla look the same with black seeds that don’t show in my picture. It must be the same root — sapote=zapote and chico= diminutive. Cool. W
